Classical Music from Gogana Part 1

Churamani Joshi; vocals, harmonium
Durga Datt Joshi
: tabla

Churamani Joshi was a pandit, astrologer, music master, Ram Lila master, and mini-shopkeeper who offered bedis, matches, soap, biscuits for sale in his tiny shop in Bhanoli at the side of the footpath to Paleri and, eventually the Panar river. Like most village pandits he provided his jajmān or clients with ritual services at birth celebrations, weddings etc. and as an astrologer he would judge the compatibility of potential marriage partners as well as suggest auspicious dates for marriages or other events. Three or four times a year Churamani arranged, produced, choreographed and directed a Ram Lila, a nine day musical enactment of major events of the Ramayan, in local villages.???
A village Ramlila organizing committee is formed and young villagers eagerly compete to take the parts of Ram, Sita, Laxman, the evil Rawan and the ever-faithful and courageous monkey god Hanuman. The stage has to be built, costumes made or repaired, parts are rehearsed, lighting and seating arrangements are made until after some two weeks hard work the first evening of the Ram Lila begins. After the evening meal villagers make their way to the Ram Lila ground where, young orderlies with sticks ensure women sit on one side and the men on the other in front of the beautifully decorated raised wooden stage which is hung with coulourful cloths and illuminated with hissing kerosene pressure lamps. Eventually, after a few welcoming speeches for the guests of honour and villagers from neighbouring villages the performance starts and continues for nine evenings.
Churamani's music guru was a Nar Singh of Chelchina who in turn, had studied music under his guru in Lucknow from 1912 – 1916. Nar Singh was employed by the Forest Department but left it on his return to Kumaon and dedicated himself to music.

As a young man Durga Datt Joshi was a celā or pupil of music master Churamani Joshi who at that time lived in his native village near Gogana. Durga Datt Joshi served in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. During this time he gained a B.A. at Gwalior University as well as becoming regimental tabla player of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). He played tabla at concerts throughout North India and taught tabla to a number of ITBP colleagues. Although he was offered a teaching position in the Music Department of at Gwalior University, he preferred to retire to his native village of Gogana in 1983 after 35 years service. Nowadays he has at least one celā and he does two or three Ram Lilas a year.

These recordings were made in December 1984 in the home of Ram Datt Joshi, Gram Pradhan, in the village of Gogana, patti Chalsi, Kali Kumaon, about 60km SE of Almora. Gogana lies in the valley of the Panar river which drains the run-off from the southern slopes of the Mornaula - Devi Dhura mountain ridges.

Girdhar, flutist of Braj,
creator of the hills and the heavens…2
This whole earth is yours, Madho(Krishna),
you wear your ochre robes.
Girdhar, flutist of Braj,
creator of the hills and the heavens…2
You ride on lotus shaped clouds,
adorned with garland of flowers…2
You carry your weapons
of Chakra (Fiery wheel) and the mace,
Yet you possess the nectar of the Gods
in your lotus shaped hands.
You hold the conch
and your neck is adorned with precious jewels.
Girdhar, flutist of Braj,
creator of the hills and the heavens…2
This whole earth is yours,
Madho (Krishna), you wear your ochre robes
On your head is a crown with peacock feathers…2
You ride on lotus shaped clouds,
adorned with garlands of flowers…2
You carry your weapons
of chakra and the mace,
Yet you posses the nectar of the Gods
in your lotus shaped hands.
You hold the conch
and your neck is adorned with precious jewels…2.
Girdhar; flutist of Braj,
creator of the hills and the heavens.

3) Raaga Bahar is sung by the saints

Download

The Raag Bahar is sung by the saints.
The delicate melody is protected and
the union of the sound is captivated by the saints.
The tone and sound of spring
is considered as the centre of music…2
Ni Sa Re Ni Sa Pa Ni Pa
Ga Ga Re Sa
The mind is enlightened Oh saints when,
when you sing the Raag Bahar.
How did the moon spread its light?
The cold winter’s night has just passed,
as if intoxicated with passion
Pulling forward your beloved’s chariot
How did the moon spread its light?
How did the moon spread its light?

Today oh Kanha (Krishna) you have enchanted
By playing your flute…2
You have charmed and captivated Radhika
By playing your flute,

Today, oh Kanha, you have enchanted,
by playing your flute.
You are praised by all, and everyday…3
Radhika carries the water pitcher over her head
And goes to fetch water
She looses all sense today, oh Kanha,
As she is entranced by you playing your flute.

Hari today you are seated under the holy peepal tree
The earth is flushed with your glow.
We recite the Brahma Veda at your abode.

What is the destination of life?…3
It is not understood why the ignorant mind goes astray
Why does my mind mislead? aa aa…
Why does my mind mislead? …2
What is the destination of life? …2

It is not understood why the ignorant mind goes astray
Why does my mind mislead? aa aa…
Why oh life?...
Where is Bhim? Where Duryodhan?
And where is the mighty chariot?...aa aa
The chariot…….
Where is Bhim? Where Duryodhan?
And where is Bhishm and Drona Rishi?…2
Not for an instant could they make out their race
But were determined to take the difficulties upon themselves

What is the destination of life?
Why does my mind mislead?…4
What is the destination of life?…4
Why does my mind mislead?

Lineage of Ravana…….ae!
Kans’s deer,
Bali, (Hanuman’s brother) strong and mighty,
whose strength contained the river Sindhu (Indus).
And who was absorbed in the earth…2

What is the destination of life?…3
It is not understood why the ignorant mind goes astray
Says Kabir, listen O sages
This world is but transient and temporary
You will never understand it
What is the destination of life?
To forget the universe thus
What is the destination of life?
Lord Nand tries to persuade.
