Classical Music from Gogana Part 2

Churamani Joshi: vocals, harmonium

Durga Datt Joshi: tabla

Churamani Joshi was a pandit, astrologer, music master, Ram Lila master, and mini-shopkeeper who offered bedis, matches, soap, biscuits for sale in his tiny shop in Bhanoli at the side of the footpath to Paleri and, eventually the Panar river. Like most village pandits he provided his jajmān or clients with ritual services at birth celebrations, weddings etc. and as an astrologer he would judge the compatibility of potential marriage partners as well as suggest auspicious dates for marriages or other events. Three or four times a year Churamani arranged, produced, choreographed and directed a Ram Lila, a nine day musical enactment of major events of the Ramayan, in local villages.???
A village Ramlila organizing committee is formed and young villagers eagerly compete to take the parts of Ram, Sita, Laxman, the evil Rawan and the ever-faithful, courageous and devoted Hanuman, monkey god . The stage has to be built, costumes made or repaired, parts are rehearsed, lighting and seating arrangements are made until, after some two weeks hard work, the first evening of the Ram Lila begins. After the evening meal villagers make their way to the Ram Lila ground where, young orderlies with sticks ensure women sit on one side and the men on the other in front of the beautifully decorated raised wooden stage which is hung with coulourful cloths and illuminated with hissing kerosene pressure lamps. Eventually, after several welcoming speeches for the guests of honour and villagers from neighbouring villages, the performance starts and continues for nine evenings.
Churamani's music guru was a Nar Singh of Chelchina who in turn, had studied music under his guru in Lucknow from 1912 – 1916. Nar Singh was employed by the Forest Department but left it on his return to Kumaon and dedicated himself to music.

As a young man Durga Datt Joshi durgadattjoshi2was a celā or pupil of music master Churamani Joshi who at that time  lived in his native village near Gogana. Durga Datt Joshi then served in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police for 35 years gaining a B.A. at Gwalior University and becoming regimental tabla player of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. Although he was offered a teaching position in the Music Department of at Gwalior University, he preferred to retire to his native village of Gogana in 1983. He still organises and performs at two or three Ram Lilas a year and he has a celā who makes good progress at his daily tuition.

The recording was made in December 1984 in the home of Ram Datt Joshi, Gram Pradhan, in the village of Gogana, patti Chalsi, Kali Kumaon, about 60km SE of Almora. Gogana lies in the valley of the Panar river which drains the run-off from the southern slopes of the Mornaula - Devi Dhura mountain ridges.

Destitute, orphaned, wanderer and the weak.

Destitute, orphaned, wanderer and the weak.

I am a subservient refugee.
Your wisdom only can give me salvation.

You dwell in every leaf, oh Lord.
I sacrifice myself for you, sacrifice myself.

I come and sing a hymn to your virtues.
Until the end of the world I sing your praises…2

I will appease my god.
I will not partake of any medication,
nor visit any Vaid, (doctor)
nor call any Vaid to see me,
I will not yearn to meet Brahma, the immortal,
nor visit any Vaid. (doctor)
I will only appease my God.
I come and sing a hymn to your virtues.

So that we leave this world laughing.
Oh Lord! We are your people.
Our actions should be such.
That we walk the path of righteousness,
and keep away from evil.
So that we leave this world laughing,
Oh Lord! We are your people.

As the world fills with darkness,
your mankind is so bewildered.
He is ignorant and unknowing.
He does not see things as they are.
Because your sun is beginning to set.

You brought us into this world oh Lord.
You brought us into this world oh Lord.
When we are confronted with evil.
You support and protect us.
When wickedness is present, let us do good.
When wickedness is present, let us do good.

Let us not harbour any feelings of revenge.
These feeling will never change.
These feeling will never change.
Each step should be towards love.

You change the darkness into light.
So that we walk the path of righteousness,
and keep away from evil.
So that we leave this world happily laughing,
O Lord we are your people.
Our actions should be such,
that we walk the path of righteousness,
and keep away from evil.
So that we leave this world happily laughing.

Krishna Kanhaiya of Brindavan,
the apple of everyone’s eyes.
In her heart of heart
why is Radhika jealous of Mohan,
who is beloved of all?
Krishna Kanhaiya of Brindavan,
 the apple of everyone’s eyes.
Krishna Kanhaiya of Brindavan,
the apple of everyone’s eyes.
Krishna Kanhaiya of Brindavan,
the apple of everyone’s eyes.
Krishna Kanhaiya of Brindavan,
the apple of everyone’s eyes.

On the banks of the Yamuna,
whenever the son of Nand dances,
On the banks of the Yamuna the son of Nand
My heart and soul moves.

When Kanha plays his melodious flute.
When Kanha plays his melodious flute.
The milkmaids stand around as if all sense is lost.
I wonder what magic he has woven.
Krishna Kanhaiya of Brindavan,
the apple of everyone’s eyes.
Krishna of Brindavan.

A complexion so pleasant;
like the colour
of the descending clouds of monsoon.
A complexion so pleasant;
like the colour
of the descending clouds of monsoon.
I have lost my senses over you oh Krishna.
Oh Creator…
I am yours…
For you oh dark one,
I have left this worldly life.
